Entrevista II

Nombre: Sergio Guerrero

Entrevista I

The gnome experiment and the mystery of the variable weights

This gnome is called Kern and this gnome is a real traveller. It does so as representative of a single experiment, which has been called "The gnome experiment". The aim is to show how, depending on the location of the planet in which it is, its weight ranges. And how can we find out? Quite simply, measuring it with the absolute accuracy of the scales produced by the creators of this fun test, the company Kern & Sohn.

The Earth is not completely spherical. If so, and if the density was uniform throughout the planet's gravity would be exactly the same over the whole surface. But it is not a perfect sphere nor has a uniform density. This means that depending on where we find ourselves, the weight will vary and with their lab kit high precision they prove it.

Depending on where in the world you see and comparing weights you can see that almost one gram of weight difference is reached. An object at either pole, north or south, is technically closer to the centre of the earth compared to the same object in the Ecuador. This equation should add the difference of inertia caused by the rotation of the planet in terms of the distance that we find of axis of rotation of this.

Brazuca, the World Cup's ball of Brazil, is the most stable

Each year, the new version of the official ball of the World Cup cause a real stir. This year also expected with particular interest given the criticism it received the South Africa World Cup.

Traditionally, the balls used during this championship were not very different from the traditional: they consisted of 32 panels of hand-stitched leather. Since 2006, however, when Adidas introduced Teamgeist (composed only of 14 panels glued together rather than stitched), the company has been introducing new and different balls for the competition, as the Jabulani 2010 and Brazuca 2014.

Does it design change affect the game? Using wind tunnels and a robot, have shown that the resistance varies with the orientation of the panel and the friction is less the fewer panels  the ball have, an effect that is further enhanced by glue instead of sewing them. The brazuca also is more rugged, since this reduces the knuckling effect that is precisely what occurs when the ball becomes unpredictable and changes direction to reach a certain speed, which criticized the Jabulani. The Brazuca with its 6 most rugged panels seems more stable.

Still, as Choppin, a researcher at Sheffield Hallam University in Britain, says a wind tunnel is not comparable to a soccer field in Brazil. In his opinion, the effects observed by the team of Hong occurred in very controlled conditions in terms of temperature and humidity, which disappear once the players step on the field.

Scientists observed the sun in different wavelengths

The images that has made this collage are from SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory), NASA. Thus, and with just a glance, you can highlight different aspects of the surface and atmosphere of the Sun.

To the naked eye, or with a conventional camera, photos, on a clear day, the picture we get from the sun would be yellow, orange or red. Why? Because, even though sunlight emits light that spans the color spectrum, yellow is the brightest wavelength we receive from the sun.

Why as the sun approaches the horizon, in putting, is when we see it redder? Simply that the density of the layer of atmosphere that has to go through is much greater than when it is, for example, at its peak. The light through the atmosphere, gradually lose the blue light waves before reaching our eyes. If we could see all the colors simultaneously would see a white disc, white light, the sum of all wavelengths.

However, thanks to the existence of specialized instruments observation, we can see wavelengths that exceed the limits of what we can observe with our eyes, and what's even better, see them represented in pictures like this. Through the photographs received, scientists receive much information on the Sun, such as the components of its surface.

Introduction to Mathematics

When we started to study mathematics, either calculus or algebra, sure I'm not the only one who has wondered how maths will serve us in our future. Is clear that will be useful as engineers, but which other uses can give you?
I hope this video will serve as inspiration.
